The History of the District Court of Kurunegala

The District Court of Kurunegala is one of the oldest & most important civil courts in Sri Lanka’s North Western Province. According to the available records, District Court was established in 1863.

It has functioned for well over a century as part of the country’s judicial system.

The judges Directory testifies that 73 Judges have served as District Judges & 24 Additional District Judges. Starting with District Judge Hon J.B. Graves.

British Colonial Period

During the British colonial period, Sri Lanka’s civil courts were organized in to judicial districts, and Kurunegala became an important judicial centre because of its strategic location & administrative importance.
